- BY SHAMZEER JALEEL

Trinity College ended the first round of the Singer Rugby League 2017 on a high note when they handed off Prince of Wales with ease by 94 points (16 tries, 7 conversions) to 09 points (3 penalties) at their Pallekele Rugby Stadium yesterday.

At the breather Trinity led 41-03.

Trinity piled up their points at will playing a super brand of rugby. Trinity from the kick off onwards kept on attacking and scoring at will. Their forwards and three quarters combined well in a 16-try blitz while the POW outfit could reply only with three penalties. Trinity who scored seven of their 16 tries in the first half displayed open rugby where their forwards too showed great pace matching their three quarter-line.

drew first blood in the third minute of the game when the ball changed hands and ended with their winger, Gaurav Seneviratne touching down. Minutes later forward Shaveen Ekanayake brushed aside a few POW defenders to find his first try of the game. POW Fullback Nalin Tharanga who played a good game for the Moratuwa outfit reduced the deficit through a 30-metre penalty kick. But Hasiru Weliwita, Hasitha Boyagoda, Pasan Samarawickrema, Warren Weerakoon and Lashan Wijesuriya took Trinity to 41 at the breather. Out of the seven tries two of them were converted by Lashan Wijesuriya.

After the turn around Trinity scored tries in tandem with even the replacement players finding their feet to run at will. Weliwita (2), Kaneesha Alwis, Weerakoon, Akitha Sakalasuriya, Dilusha Dange (2), S. Abeywarna, Praveeshan Wijewickrema and Rashen Bandaranayake scored tries. Dange converted three of them. For POW, Tharanga who fougth a lone battle put over two more penalties for his school. Anil Mangala refereed.
