Be cautious when lighting firecrackers: NHSL

- BY THILANKA KANAKARATHNA

The Colombo National Hospital (CNH) yesterday asked people to be cautious when consuming alcohol and lighting fire crackers so as to ensure an accident-free National New Year.

“We usually see an increase in the number of accidents caused by fireworks during the festive season. Many of the accidents take place because people are careless. The people should ensure that children are safe when fireworks are being lit,” CNH coordinator Pushpa Ramyani de Soysa said. “The influence of liquor coupled with short tempers and carelessness when driving shows an increase during the season. Motorists must take necessary precautions when at the wheel.”

She asked parents to keep an eye on their children while attending sports festivals as the number of accidents at these events also increased each year. “Parents are responsible for their children, they should look after them especially when they attend these festivals,” Ms. de Soysa said. She also asked people to consume sufficient quantities of water to remain hydrated and not spend too much time outdoors because of the high temperature currently being experienced in Sri Lanka. “Please wear sunglasses and long sleeves to protect the body from the heat generated by the sun,” she said.
