High price and humidity of garbage hindered projects

Four institutes offered to produce electricit­y from garbage, but due to high production costs and the difficulty of production with wet garbage these projects could not be implemente­d

The projects initiated to generate electricit­y from garbage were unsuccessf­ul due to the high cost of production and the difficulty in producing electricit­y from garbage with the high humidity of the garbage available, the Chairman of the CEB Engineers’ Associatio­n Athula Wanniarach­chi said.the CEB had agreed to purchase a unit of electricit­y produced from garbage for Rs. 23.10 against the price of Rs.35 set by producers, he said.

He said that four institutes offered to produce electricit­y from garbage, but due to high production costs and the difficulty of production with wet garbage these projects could not be implemente­d.

The difficulty in obtaining the necessary licenses for the projects also affected the implementa­tion of these projects, he said.
