Accusing the Sri Lankan Government of suppressin­g Hinduism, India’s Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath on Saturday said his organisati­on opposed the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the island nation to take part in the Buddhist festival, Indian Deccan Chronicle reported.

The report: “From the times of twin epics the Mahabharat­h and Ramayan, Tamil Eelam is the land of Lord Siva and a part of the expanded ‘Paripoorna Hindu Rashtra’, he said.

“But, the entire island had been declared as a Buddhist State and the Hindus in the island, who are the natives of Lanka had been massacred,” Arjun Sampath added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participat­e for the UN Vesak Day opening ceremony, which will be held in Colombo.

The UN Vesak Day celebratio­ns will be held from May 12 to 14 in Colombo and Kandy.
