Serendib Flour Mills brightens up Vesak celebratio­ns with students, local communitie­s

Serendib Flour Mills as part of its corporate social responsibi­lity (CSR) commitment recently celebrated the religious festival of Vesak by organising a lantern competitio­n for 40 students from the Centre for the Education of Hearing Impaired Children (CEHIC).

The company also hosted a 7-Star bun in collaborat­ion with Miyurasa Bakery, Narahenpit­a. The staff members from a cross section of department­s participat­ed in both events, which were hosted as part of SFML’S commitment to celebrate important religious and cultural occasions, whilst supporting local youth and communitie­s.

The students at the CEHIC had to demonstrat­e their creative talents and team-building skills by creating unique and vibrant Vesak lanterns. In the class category, the peacock, tortoise and rabbit teams secured the first, second and third prizes, respective­ly, whilst the students Shahimal and Nethumal won the prizes in the individual category alongside their fellow students Ridhma and Sandakaleu­m.

The SFML team was present to facilitate the competitio­n, which was judged by two Buddhist clergy members and a representa­tive from Leo Burnett’s creative team. CEHIC is a school that provides free education for children from all walks of life who are living with hearing impairment­s. Dedicated to fostering understand­ing as well as multi-ethnic cooperatio­n and religious harmony, the school was founded in 1982 and is currently under the purview of Sr. Greta Nalawatta of the Sisters of Perpetual Help. The SFML team also organised the annual 7-Star bun dansala in collaborat­ion with one of its direct dealers Miyurasa Bakery in Narahenpit­a. The was held on Vesak Day and after obtaining blessings from the Maha Sanga, a total of 15,000 buns were distribute­d by employees and well-wishers of both organisati­ons, to passers-by and pilgrims.

Commenting on the events, SFML CEO Kevin O’leary said, “We are delighted that the SFML team was able to come together to participat­e in the traditions of Vesak, one of the most important religious and cultural celebratio­ns of the year. It was important for us to commemorat­e this important occasion as a team and we are pleased that we were also able to support local students and community members with our efforts. All of the students at the CEHIC created beautiful lanterns as part of the competitio­n and it was a pleasure for us to be able to spend time with them. We are also grateful to Miyurasa Bakery for joining hands with us to run a bun dansala and provide community members and pilgrims with a nourishing and well-loved buns made from 7-Star Bakers Flour.”
