Haphazard removal of garbage

Police to prosecute those who dump garbage in public places

- BY MUDITHA DAYANANDA

The residents of Narahenpita Police division complaints that the removal of garbage in the area is not up to standard. Despite a date had been allocated for each area by the Colombo Municipality for the removal of garbage, it appears that these are not adhered to, in case of a vehicle break down, garbage is collected and dumped beside houses.

The CMC had declared that if garbage is not segregated according to the specified categories, it would not be removed, it so happens that most of the vehicles load them in bulk making the attempts of house holders to segregate the garbage a futile attempt.

The Narahenpita Police said that they could prosecute those who keep dumping garbage in public places. They have already apprehended about 25 individuals after identifying them through the CCTV cameras of dumping garbage and instituted court action against them.

A police team under the direction of Colombo ASP Roshan Dias had been set up and arresting those who continue to dump garbage is continuing. Police say that prosecution alone is not going to solve this problem creating an awareness among the residents is more fruitful. The irregular system of transportation is prompting people to dump garbage wherever they think as noncollection is causing them severe discomfort and causing nausea.

Replying to our queries on this subject the Colombo Municipal Commissioner V.K.A. Anura said that with the incessant rains the removal of the garbage was disrupted, and after the residents were informed to segregate the garbage, the removals were done on separate days. Waste food and Kitchen spoils were removed on certain days while other garbage removed on other days.

However, the garbage cleaners use to collect all garbage together and take them away. This type of behaviour needs to have them educated. We have observed some attempting to disrupt and sabotage the smooth operation.

“We earnestly request house holders to cooperate with the authorities, by segregating the garbage before handing them over to the vehicles transporting the garbage”.
