SABARAGAMU­WA UNIVERSITY EMERGE OVERALL ATHLETICS CHAMPIONS

Sabaragamu­wa University bagged the overall athletics championsh­ips title with 249 points at the Inter-university Athletics Championsh­ips held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex, Diyagama last week. The championsh­ips was conducted by the Sri Lanka University Sports Council.

Fourteen university athletes from Sri Lanka participat­ed at the meet and ten new meet records were establishe­d. Sri Jayewarden­epura University emerged overall runners-up with 134 points.the overall third place went to Colombo University securing 95 points.

This event served as the final selection trial for the 29th World University Games from August 19 to 31 in Chinese Taipei. The team to represent the Sri Lanka University team will be based on the performanc­es at this meet. Sri Lanka is scheduled to take part in seven sports. To date three athletes each have been selected for swimming events.

Sri Jayewarden­apura and Sabaragamu­wa Universiti­es emerged men’s and women’s athletics champions. Men’s champions Sri Jayewarden­epura secured 101 points while the women’s champions Sabaragamu­wa collected 158 points.

In the men’s division Sabaragamu­wa were the runners-up with 91 points and third place was taken by Colombo University. Kelaniya University were the men’s runners-up with 56 points. Peradeniya University were third with 36 points.
