“Govt. to provide relief to politicallyvictimised public servants”

During the past, the public service was heavily politicised and public servants were under heavy pressure, Public Administration and Management Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said recently.
“Many UNP supporters and sympathisers were victimised in the past. The government is considering providing relief to these victimised public servants. The committees appointed when our government came into power have made recommendations for each ministry about the relief to be granted. The Cabinet decided on January 1 to appoint a threemember committee of retired senior government officials to consider the appeals from those who were dissatisfied with the recommendations made by the committees appointed previously,” he said.
The minister said more than 1,000 appeals that could not be settled at a ministerial level were received by the committee, and that some 700 of them were from dissatisfied employees.
“Most of these appeals were from the employees of the ministries of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Development and Transport. The appeal committee has considered 1,100 complaints by April 16 this year. The recommendations of this committee will be presented to the Cabinet before long. Although the committee was to be terminated on April 16, the Cabinet decided to extend the period to three more months considering the number and nature of appeals received,” he said.
