Tto file legal action against those who dump garbage on the road side and we will file legal action against them with immediate effect,” Mr Anura said.

Asked as to why the CMC had not collected garbage from some areas , he said the main reason for it was that people in the respective areas had not heeded the request made by them to separate their garbage as instructed.

The CMC had already requested the people to separate food waste, plastic goods, polythene and paper in separate bags.

“More than 25 percent of the city dwellers do not separate their garbage as they are asked to do,” Mr Anura said while highlighting that some types of garbage such as plastic goods and paper are not collected as these could be kept for some time unlike other stuff such as food waste. “It is sufficient if stuff such as bottles are collected even once a month,” he also said.

He said stuff such as food waste is collected twice a week as usual. “We collect around 400 tons of such garbage from the city for a day,” he further said. he Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) is to take legal action against those who dump garbage on the road side and those who fail to separate the waste with immediate effect, a senior official of the Council said yesterday.

CMC Commissioner V K Anura told Daily Mirror that the council has begun apprehending those who dump garbage on the road side as of last evening.
