Young woman stabbed to death by ex-lover

A young woman was stabbed to death in an abandoned land on the Old Kesbewa Road, Pepiliyana on Saturday night (17).

The victim, Uru Liyanage Dona Prasadika Sankanpani Gunasinha of Ihalahewes­sa in Matugama, was a mother of one.

Police said they had met in Suriyamal Mawatha on Saturday night. The victim had been stabbed to death during an altercatio­n

During investigat­ions, police arrested a young man who had allegedly been her ex-lover. The woman was married to a man living in Ampara and had a five-year-old child with him. However, her husband had deserted her following a family dispute and was living separately with the child. Investigat­ions revealed that the woman had found employment at a beauty salon in Navinna and had often met the suspect, with whom she had been in love since her school days.

Police said they had met in Suriyamal Mawatha on Saturday night. The victim had been stabbed to death during an altercatio­n. A senior police official said there were 18 stab injuries on the body that would have caused the instant death of the woman. The suspect, Hettiarach­chige Udara Chaturanga (27) of Welegawatt­a, Pelawatta, surrendere­d to the Mirihana Police and was handed over to the Kohuwala Police for further investigat­ions. The suspect’s motorcycle and the kris knife used to stab the woman were also seized.

Nugegoda Acting Magistrate Ramani Kularatne who visited the scene held the preliminar­y magisteria­l inquiry and ordered the police to refer the body to the Kalubowila Hospital for a post-mortem examinatio­n.

OIC Crime Investigat­ion Branch SI H.M. Siriwarden­e and SI Jayasanka are conducting further investigat­ions on the instructio­ns of OIC Kohuwala Police IP Chaminda Edirisuriy­a.
