Landslide warning extended for 3 districts

Landslide warning has been further extended to the Rathnapura, Kegalle and Galle districts following heavy showers anticipate­d during the day, National Building Research Organisati­on (NBRO) said.

NBRO report issued at 3.00 p.m. yesterday on the recommenda­tion of the Emergency Operation Center, Disaster Management Centre (EOCDMS) said to be vigilant about possible landslides, rock falls and cut slope failure if the rain continues. “People lives in all the mountainou­s areas, man made cut slopes and natural slopes within the risky areas need to pay special attention if rain continues,” it said.

Meanwhile the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) report released at 1800 hours yesterday revealed 415,439 people belonging to 109,041 families has been affected by the recent floods, heavy showers and high winds, landslide or cut slope failures.

According to the report 213 people were killed from the adverse weather conditions recently, injuring another 126 while 76 people went missing. Further 3,124 total property damages and 20,771 partially damages were reported so far according to the report.

In the weather forecast report issued at 1600 hours yesterday predicted several spells of showers in Western, Sabaragamu­wa Central and North Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts today.

It said showers or thunder showers could be expected at several places in the Uva and Eastern provinces after 2 p.m. as well. Meteorolog­y Department also warned that there could be temporary localized strong winds during thundersho­wers therefore, requested the public to take adequate precaution­s to minimize damages caused by lightning activities.
