ANTI-DENGUE LARVAE STILL NOT USED IN URBAN AREAS

- BY SHEAIN FERNANDOPULLE.

The Parasitological and Entomology Unit said the newly introduced larvae for controlling the spread of dengue were not being used in urban areas.

Dr. Sagarika Samarasinghe said the larvae could consume about 350 dengue larvae a day.

Our experiments at the Medical Research Institute (MRI) have shown that they have the capability to consume dengue larvae. We have released some larvae in rural areas and are in the process of acclimatizing them to urban areas, she said. “These herbivorous mosquitoes do not suck blood and therefore we can guarantee that there was no harm caused by the spread of these larvae.”
