Underworld more powerful than govt.: GL

- BY LAHIRU POTHMULLA

Even the underworld of Sri Lanka is more powerful than the country’s government because of the government’s incapability and inefficiency, Professor G.L. Peiris said yesterday.

Addressing a news conference of the joint opposition, he said no one’s life was safe in this backdrop.“it was only on Monday an armed gang robbed Rs.7.8 million in Ragama.the government is not taking any stern action to address these issues,” he said. He said even the trade unions continue to tighten the grip around the government’s neck by staging protest and strikes daily because of the government’s inability to come up with lasting solutions to pressing issues of the people.

“Today, Sri Lanka is becoming a state with anarchy.the government is no use to the people and its decisions continue to be inefficient. Government leaders are not capable of at least solving a minor issue,” Professor Peiris said.

Referring to the controversial allocations of institutions such as the Lotteries Board bringing under the Foreign Ministry, he said President Maithripala Sirisena giving in to the needs of individual ministers.
