GENERATING ELECTRICITY THROUGH WASTE NOT PROFITABLE: CHAMPIKA
Even though the waste could generate electricity it is not a profitable business but a solution to the garbage crisis, Megapolis and Western Development Minister Champika Ranawaka said yesterday.
Participating an event to initiate the construction of two incineration plants at Muthurajawela under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena, he said only 5,000 to 6,000 kilojoules (kj) of energy can be generate d per waste kilo, however there are more efficient resources.
“Over 25,000 kj of energy can be generated through coal while the diesel can generate over 45,000 kj of energy. Therefore waste to power is not easy and not cost effective.
But as a solution to the garbage issue it is important to adopt this,” he said.

Minister said except for the Colombo Municipality all the other municipalities are not capable to resolve the garbage issue with the assessment tax income therefore they should impose a tipping fee for garbage collection.
Meanwhile, the Minister requested the public to support the sanitary land fill to be commenced at the Aruwakkalu area in the near future.
He asked the public not to reverse the upcoming investments that are doing for the future generations.
Muthurajawela is the country’s first private sector waste to energy project to be built at Rs. 27 billion which would add 20Mwts to the national grid.
