Causing 29 mn loss to state by operating illegal rock quarry

Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered the two suspects to be further remanded including Capt. Tissa Wimalasena, the driver and the security officer of the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Those who were arrested allegedly causing Rs.29 million loss to the government by operating an illegal rock quarry in a stateowned land in the Koratota area.

When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Chanima Wijebandara, the defence counsel had requested bail for the second suspect, a former member of the Puttalam Pradeshiya Saba Lal Priyantha Peiris stating that the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID) had completed the investigations regarding the case and they had not recorded any evidence against the second suspect.

However, the Additional Magistrate directed that both suspects were arrested by the FCID under provisions of Public Property Act and Money Laundering Act, and according to the Public Property Act, there should be special conditions to release a suspect on bail. However, the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court rejected bail application filed on behalf of Capt. Tissa Wimalasena, three days ago.

The suspects had been charged with operating a rock quarry situated at a land owned by the Land Reclamation Commission claiming that it was belonged to the Maga Naguma Project.
