GEETHA ONLY MP WITH DUALCITIZE­NSHIP

Immigratio­n Controller to PAFFREL

The Immigratio­n Controller has informed the election observer PAFFREL yesterday that Parliament­arian Geetha Kumarasing­he was the only MP who holds a dual-citizenshi­p.

Addressing a news briefing, PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarach­chi said Immigratio­n Controller M.N. Ranasinghe had informed them in writing that it was only Ms. Kumarasing­he who had been issued with a dualcitize­nship certificat­e numbered 17096A.

“The Controller had obtained a list of details of all MPS from Parliament Secretary General including their names, dates of birth and identity card numbers. The details had been fed into the the department’s electronic data system which includes details of dual-citizenshi­p holders. The department had also cross-referenced obtained data with the details of dual-citizenshi­p holders which were not included in the computer The Controller had then confirmed that it was only Galle District MP Kumarasing­he who is a dual-citizen system. He said they have been informed that no certificat­e of dual-citizenshi­p had been issued to other 224 Members of Parliament. The PAFFREL wrote to the Immigratio­n Controller on May 17, under the Right To Informatio­n Act, requesting details of MPS who held dual-citizenshi­p certificat­es. Following the request, the Immigratio­n Department had obtained the detailed list from the Parliament Secretaryg­eneral on June 6.
