It said a minor flood situation was reported from the Galle and Mullaitivu Districts with low-lying areas including Balapitiya, Nagoda, Kadawathsathara being under threat as a result of Maadu Ganga overflowing last afternoon. DMC personnel in the district said the opening of the estuary in Ging Ganga had also contributed to the situation. Rescue squads were kept on alert for emergency operations.

Meanwhile, our correspondents in the North said a gale force wind, which struck Mullaitivu on Monday night, damaged several houses and trees falling across roads bringing vehicular transport on the Mullaitivuthandikulum Road to a standstill.

The DMC warned those living in the vicinity of mountain slopes and along river banks to be vigilant.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) issued landslide warnings in Nagoda and Yatalamatta in the Galle District and Ambagamuwa and Ginigathhena in the Nuwara Eliya District.

DMC Director Media Pradeep Kodippily said people should be on alert because more rains could trigger landslides and added that water levels in major rivers such as Kelani Ganga, Kalu Ganga, Kukele Ganga and Attanagaluoya were rising.

Many areas in the country had received a rainfall of more than 100 mm as of yesterday with some areas in the Ratnapura, Galle, Kalutara and Kegalle districts receiving a rainfall of more than 100 mm last afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology also confirmed that there would be heavy showers as a result of the prevailing inter-monsoonal condition. The Department predicted heavy showers exceeding 100 mm
