Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) faced a huge challenge when consenting to form the unity government in August 2015.

“We are for changes for the good of the country. In England, they have a social market economy which is extremely successful. The unity government concept is something new for Sri Lanka and we have to go a long way to achieve its full benefits. We must fight for unity and not for separation. Separation is not beneficial for the country and the people,” the Prime Minister said.
He said this when launching the government’s Economic Development Plan -- Vision 2025 ‘A Rich Country’ held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the BMICH.
Responding to a question, the Prime Minister said Sri Lanka followed the precepts of the Non Aligned Movement as its foreign policy while maintaining good relations with the United Nation, the European Union, the UN Human Rights Council and India.
“‘Vision 2025’ maps out the government’s economic strategy for the next three years and beyond. The ‘Vision 2025’, which has the tagline ‘A country enriched’, talks about making Sri Lanka the hub in the Indian Ocean and securing opportunities for local businesses in global production networks. This outward-looking approach will increase the efficiency of the domestic economy, contributing to a better life for all Sri Lankans,” the policy document stated.
It also mentions the government’s already announced plans to raise the per capita income to US$5,000, create one million jobs, increase foreign direct investment to US$ 5 billion and double exports to US$ 20 billion by 2020.
Speaking at the event, the President said that forming a consensual government, a new political experience which has never been seen before by anyone was for the betterment of the country and its people.
“Despite whatever allegations levelled against the consensual government or how challenging the journey, it is a must that we should fulfil vision for the benefit of the country and its people,” he said.
