Cricket selection committee today

- BY SHEHAN DANIEL

The new cricket selection committee led by Graeme Labrooy is to be finalized today, upon the ratifications by Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera. The selection panel will likely include Gamini Wickramasinghe, Jeryl Woutersz and Sri Lanka’s Cricket Manager Asanka Gurusinha, but the names are yet to be ratified. Minister Jayasekera told the ‘Daily Mirror’ that he is yet to receive the names of the nominees to be considered for the selection panel.

Gurusinha will be the only member of the previous selection committee, headed by Sanath Jayasuriya to be retained in the new committee. Labrooy was on Friday named the Chairman of the Committee – though it is uncertain how this will affect his duties as an ICC Match Referee – and his first course of action will be wittle down Sri Lanka’s 25-member provisional pool for the Test series against Pakistan which begins in the United Arab Emirates later this month.

Jayasuriya and his panel of selectors, including Ranjith Madurasinghe, Eric Upashantha, Romesh Kaluwitharana and Gurusinha, quit midway through the One Day International series against India earlier this month, citing the team’s poor performances that led to unsavory crowd reactions during the third ODI in Pallekele.

Woutersz most recently served as team manager under the Sidath Wettimuny-led interim committee.
