GOPIO SL to host career developmen­t programme for A/L students

The Sri Lankan chapter of Global Organizati­on for Persons of Indian Origin (GOPIO) SL organized a career developmen­t seminar today.

The objective of this programme is to provide Advanced level students in plantation area schools the skills that will help them identify their profession­al interests, build self-confidence and act as a guidance when they consider their career options. “The seminar will be represente­d by a group of visionarie­s from the business and academic sector which will be attended by nearly 300 students from three different schools in Kegalle District,” said GOPIO Internatio­nal Sri Lanka Chapter Vice President and Organizing Committee Chairman Soundarara­jan. “This first of its kind this programme of GOPIO Sri Lanka will take place at Deraniyaga­la Sri Kathiresan Maha Vidyalaya this Saturday,” he further added. GOPIO SL stated that Tamils of Indian Origin have substantia­l population­s in Central, Uva and Sabaragamu­wa Provinces of Sri Lanka. The organizati­on has been thus far assisting school leavers of those areas in job placements on a small scale. The programme is now being expanded.

Participat­ing schools at this event are St. Mary’s College Yatiyantho­ta, Tamil Maha Vidhyalaya Dehiovita and Deraniyaga­la Sri Kathiresan Maha Vidyalaya of Kegalle district. A presentati­on of books and English training manuals for young adults and children has been arranged by GOPIO Sri Lanka Past President P.P. Devaraj. Chief Guest Assistant High Commission­er of India to Sri Lanka Radha Venkatrama­n in Kandy will be presenting the books to the school.

GOPIO Sri Lanka President Kaushik Udeshi stated that people of Indian origin living outside India have meaningful­ly integrated in their countries while maintainin­g their ethnic identity. He further stated that GOPIO Sri Lanka involves in civic affairs and service to the local communitie­s.
