PHIS in DehiwalaMount Lavinia raid food outlets
A large stock of food unfit for human consumption was destroyed and legal action taken against several traders by the health authorities of the Dehiwala – Mount Lavinia Municipal Council during raids on hotels, restaurants and catering services in Dehiwala , Kohuwala and Nugegoda areas.
The PHIS who carried out the raids found cooked food, and food processed for cooking had been left in the refrigerators for weeks without least concerned about its health hazard. They found eggs with poultry waste and droppings used for egg hoppers without cleaning. The kitchens and the food store rooms in several hotels were in an insanitary condition due to poor maintenance and infested with rats, cockroaches and geckos. Chief PHI Jayantha Daluwatta said six kilos of chicken, four kilos of pork, 100 eggs with poultry droppings, four kilos of Ajino Moto, and a large stock of kottu rotti, short eats, date expired milk food, margarine, and banned sweeteners were destroyed during the raid.
Public Health Inspectors R.p.t.shehan Rajapakse, Wasanha Pushpakumaa, Wasantha Jayasinghe, E.P.J.I Madura, Amila Maduranga, and Kumara Asanka carried out the raid on the instructions of Chief PHI Jayantha Daluwatta and Municipal Commissioner Dhammika Mutugala.
