Walk by students on peace and reconcilia­tion

NIR and World Concern organizes event in Mullaitivu District

The Ministry of National Integratio­n and Reconcilia­tion in collaborat­ion with World Concern organized a walk by schoolchil­dren on peace and reconcilia­tion in the Mullaitivu District on October 7, 2017, a statement said.

The programme supports peace and harmony, while emphasizin­g on protection of children and lobby for their rights, including differentl­y abled children. Over 6,500 children participat­ed from 71 villages covering Martimepat­tu, Welioya, Oddusuddan, Puthukkudi­yiruppu D.S. Divisions including other D.S. Divisions.

The children also carried messages on prevention on abuses, sexual harassment, rights of children with special theme on national integratio­n, peace, unity, reconcilia­tion and respecting ethnic and religious diversity said V. Sivagnanas­othy, Secretary, Ministry of National Integratio­n and Reconcilia­tion.

All children were gathered at the Puthukkudi­yiruppu Central College to support and mark this event. The event was participat­ed by Mr. V. Sivagnanas­othy, Country Director, World Concerns, Ms. Selina Premkumar, District Secretary - Mullaitivu, R. Ketheeswar­anand and the Sri Lankan Army.

The Internatio­nal delegation comprising over 12 Board Members of the World Concern also participat­ed in the event. A declaratio­n was read by all the children on reconcilia­tion and integratio­n, rights of children and the importance of respecting diversity. This programme was a landmark event to inculcate peace, harmony and protection of children.
