PM TO MAKE SPECIAL STATEMENT IN P’MENT
State of the country’s economy
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday he would make a special statement on the state of the country’s economy in Parliament on Friday.
He said this at the opening of the Asoka Pura, a part of the Udagama Village reawakening programme, which was carried out by the Ministry of Housing and Construction. “I will make a special statement in Parliament on Friday and will inform the country on government plans to attract investors and speed up rural development while Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera will spell out how we are going to tackle debt servicing in 2018 when he dilvers his budget speech on November 9, 2017,” the Prime Minister said. He said during the next two years the country had to pay back a total debt component of Rs.3 trillion. “This government will complete the repayment of debts off during its term of office,” the Prime Minister said.

He said government would also have to focus on controlling the cost of living as well.“prices of some essential items like coconuts had gone up and it is essential to control these prices,” the Prime Minister said and added that the government hoped to bring down the budget deficit to less than four per cent by 2020.
