ATTRACTIVE FARE EXPECTED AT MERCANTILE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

- BY SUSIL PREMALAL

The 34th SLT Mercantile Athletics Championships will commence today and will continue on October 21 and 22 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex. The event is being conducted by the Mercantile Athletics Federation of Sri Lanka. The sponsors of the event are Sri Lanka Telecom.

54 firms from the mercantile, banking and private sector will be taking part in the three day contest featuring over 2,000 athletes and 173 events while national level athletes will be taking part in the event as well. Due to the fact that there will be several national athletes taking part in the event, there is the possibility that several national records will be lowered, the organisers stated.

Leaving aside the National Athletics Championships, the largest number of participants taking part in an athletic competition is the Mercantile Athletics Championships.

Over 50 Indian athletes too will take part in the competition.

The events will be Men’s Novices and Championships (Over 30, Over 35, Over 40, Over 45, Over 50 and Over 55) while the women’s championships too will be in the same age categories as well.

The winners and runners-up are in line for 36 trophies. Other than that the Indian athletes will receive separate trophies.

Last year Sri Lankan Telecom bagged the overall trophy.
