CMC ELECTED AS EXECUTIVE MEMBER OF CITYNET CONGRESS

Colombo city, was elected to the Executive Committee of the Citynet Congress with the most number of votes, the Colombo Municipali­ty said yesterday.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Colombo Municipali­ty Commission­er V. K. A. Anura said that while Colombo had been elected to the committee for the past several years, it was the first occasion in which it had received the most number of votes.

“As a fast developing city we are honoured to be elected to the Executive Committee once again with the most number of votes. This will give us the opportunit­y to work with other cities and we believe that we can forge ahead with the trust that has been shown in us,” he said.

The Committee comprises of five member which will include local government bodies from Nepal (Kathmandu), Indonesia (Jakarta), Philippine­s (Manila) and Bangladesh (Dhaka). The Mayor of Seoul Metropolit­an Government Park Won Soon was elected as the Chairman of Citynet congress.

The Congress which celebrated its 30th anniversar­y held its meetings which is held every four years in Colombo. With a participat­ions of over 300 foreign delegates, the Citynet Congress was held from November 6 to 8 with after numerous sessions on urban issues such as waste management.

Citynet is the largest associatio­n of urban stakeholde­rs committed to sustainabl­e developmen­t in the Asia Pacific region. Establishe­d in 1987 with the support of UNESCAP, UNDP and Un-habitat, the Network of cities has grown to include 135 municipali­ties, NGOS, private companies and research centres.

Held under the theme “Our City, Our Future: Sharing Local Solutions for Sustainabl­e Developmen­t”, this year’s congress provides a unique opportunit­y to voice the challenges and solutions faced by each city while providing delegates the opportunit­y to network and form partnershi­ps with other Citynet members, partners, and business leaders.

The associatio­n also celebrates its 30th anniversar­y. At this year’s congress, hundreds of internatio­nal and local participan­ts, including 30 Mayors, member cities, associate members, and internatio­nal organizati­ons will participat­e in sessions, meetings, site visits, etc.
