CMC ELECTED AS EXECUTIVE MEMBER OF CITYNET CONGRESS
Colombo city, was elected to the Executive Committee of the Citynet Congress with the most number of votes, the Colombo Municipality said yesterday.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Colombo Municipality Commissioner V. K. A. Anura said that while Colombo had been elected to the committee for the past several years, it was the first occasion in which it had received the most number of votes.
“As a fast developing city we are honoured to be elected to the Executive Committee once again with the most number of votes. This will give us the opportunity to work with other cities and we believe that we can forge ahead with the trust that has been shown in us,” he said.
The Committee comprises of five member which will include local government bodies from Nepal (Kathmandu), Indonesia (Jakarta), Philippines (Manila) and Bangladesh (Dhaka). The Mayor of Seoul Metropolitan Government Park Won Soon was elected as the Chairman of Citynet congress.
The Congress which celebrated its 30th anniversary held its meetings which is held every four years in Colombo. With a participations of over 300 foreign delegates, the Citynet Congress was held from November 6 to 8 with after numerous sessions on urban issues such as waste management.
Citynet is the largest association of urban stakeholders committed to sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. Established in 1987 with the support of UNESCAP, UNDP and Un-habitat, the Network of cities has grown to include 135 municipalities, NGOS, private companies and research centres.
Held under the theme “Our City, Our Future: Sharing Local Solutions for Sustainable Development”, this year’s congress provides a unique opportunity to voice the challenges and solutions faced by each city while providing delegates the opportunity to network and form partnerships with other Citynet members, partners, and business leaders.
The association also celebrates its 30th anniversary. At this year’s congress, hundreds of international and local participants, including 30 Mayors, member cities, associate members, and international organizations will participate in sessions, meetings, site visits, etc.
