Successful tenderer, a monk fails to pay stall rent

The Buddhist monk who was the successful tenderer of the Matugama beef stall has been granted time till November 16 to pay three months’ rent as required under tender conditions.

Secretary of the Matugama Pradeshiya Sabha,asoka Ranasinghe said Ven.mavita Gnanaratha­na Thera who submitted the highest tender for Rs.3,225, 622 had failed to deposit the rent on the due date and that he was granted time. He said if there was a further delay he would award the contract to the next highest tenderer.

Meanwhile President of the Matugama Traders’associatio­n,member of the Western Provincial Council Jagath Vithana said the tender for the beef stall had created a controvers­ial issue affecting consumers. He said public were divided in opinion on having a beef stall in town. However, even after paying the rent, the tender could be cancelled if the Ven.thera failed to run the beef stall.
