Strikers demand in Mawanella

A tense atmosphere prevailed at Mahattegama junction in Mawanella town due to a protest staged by the residents of several areas including the Mahasangha demanding that the authorities repair the Mawanella – Gampola road that had been in a dilapidated state for a long time. More than 1000 people from Mahattegama, Molligoda, Heenatigala and Kahawandala areas participated. They said their persistent requests in this regard to politicians representing the area had fallen on deaf ears.

The protestors obstructed traffic on the Colombo – Kandy highway for more than four hours causing inconvenience to travellers including foreign tourists.

However they dispersed when Executive Engineer, Rambukkana Division Roshan Wickremesinghe met them and promised to resolve the issue soon.

A police contingent of more than 100 had been deployed to maintain law and order and to prevent any incidents of violence.
