MAN ARRESTED FOR SELLING MAVA DRUG

Aracketeer, who peddled a narcotic drug that had a street name Mava in the plantation regions was arrested by Police officers of Thalawakal­e Special Task Force along with the Excise Officers of the Hatton Excise Office yesterday.

When the suspect was arrested, 100 kilos of Mava, a lot of flavoring tobacco, which is used in the making of Mava and a lot of babuls were recovered.

The arrest was made based on a tip-off received by the Excise Department and the STF.

The Police said that the racketeer was distributi­ng Mava in a stall in the Hatton-kotagala town and was arrested with the help of a decoy.

When the suspect was arrested, 100 kilos of Mava, a lot of flavoring tobacco, which is used in the making of Mava and a lot of babuls were recovered.

Officers of the Excise Office said that the main racketeer was a resident of the Kotagala area and the arrangemen­ts had been made to produce the suspect before Hatton Magistrate.

Mava is reportedly widely used by the youths of the estate area and many schoolchil­dren.

The arrest was made by a team of Police Officers together with Excise Officers on the instructio­ns of Commanding Officer A.A.U. Ranasuriya of STF in Central Province and Commanding Officer, Chief Inspector A.U.D. Udayakumar­a of Thalawakal­e STF Unit.
