Sub Committee on petrol submits report
A time-based contract system valid for a definite time period, instead of existing tender board system for individual shipments of oil should be followed to prevent future fuel crises, the Cabinet Sub-committee appointed to report on the recent petrol scarcity has recommended.
The Government appointed the Sub-committee to report on the recent oil crisis and submit a report to Minister of Special Assignment Sarath Amunugama as its Chairman. The report of the committee has now been handed over to the Government including recommendation to avoid incidents of future adverse situations.
Among the recommendations were: Adoption of modern stock control management systems to identify weak points in storage process and high cost stages in the physical structure of stocking and distribution of oil, to enter into long term agreements of oil supply on fixed price in a more transparent procedure, to introduce a procedure to buy oil from countries in close location (G 20) on emergency situation.
Increasing the capacity of Muthurajawela stores complex and increasing the output capacity of the Sapugaskanda oil refinery are also among the measures recommended by the Sub-committee.
