LG polls not aimed at toppling Government:hizbullah

- BY. M.S.M NOORDEEN

The Local Government Elections are not an election held to topple or change the incumbent government, Sate Minister of Rehabilitation and Resettlement M.L.A.M Hizbullah said.

He made the above comments after he declared open the Kathankudy SLFP candidate’s office yesterday.

“There is no clear understanding among the people about the new electoral system of election introduced after 1977. The people in this area can cast their votes only to the candidate contesting in this ward and he would be responsible for the development of this area. We have done extensive development in this area, however, there is more to be done. The Local Government election is not an election to change or topple the incumbent government. It is not aimed at toppling President Maithripala Sirisena or me. It is one held to develop your area and enhance the economic situation there,” Mr. Hizbullah said.

He said that if the members elected were to function effectively, financial assistance should be provided by the government.

“Hence, by supporting the candidates contesting under President Maithripala Sirisena, solutions could be found for the problems faced by the public. On the other hand if you cast your votes to one who does not wield power, your problems cannot be solved at all. The President is the leader of our party. The SLFP has Ministerial and Parliamentary power. We have only appointed the Governors after the Provincial Councils were dissolved. Under these circumstances, when the SLFP wields the Presidential power, Parliamentary power and the Provincial Councils power and if the Urban Council too could be brought under the SLFP, we could get all our needs fulfilled,” State Minister Hizbullah said.
