MEGAPOLIS ALLOCATES RS.175 MILLION FOR DEVELOPMENT OF BORALASGAMUWA LAKE
The Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development is to allocate Rs. 175 million for the development of the Boralesgamuwa Lake under the Sukithapurawara programme.
Under the first phase of the project, the lake and its vicinity will be cleared up, with the support of the Navy within a month, a communiqué by the ministry said.
In the second and third phase of the project a walking pathway would be constructed under the guidance of the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLRDC), it is said.
“A tourist centre and an open airtheatre is to be constructed on the islands in the lake,” the Ministry said. Officials also said a sewerage system would also be built in the area under the project.
The Ministry said the project would be conducted under the infrastructure development project of Sukithapurawara.
The preliminary development of the area commenced under a project proposal of Dhanushka Ramanayaka, the former Media Secretary of Megapolis Minister Champika Ranawaka.
Measures were also being introduced to bring projects for the development of irrigation facilities in the area to provide water facilities for cultivation in the surrounding area.
Rs. 50 million would be allocated for the development of the irrigation facilities in the area by the Irrigation Department. The Boralesgamuwa Lake was considered to be the smallest lake in the country and the entire project was expected to be completed by the end of this year.
