Man commits suicide after slitting lovers throat

Due to a failed love affair

A 34-year-old man from Welipenna, who had a long standing clandestin­e affair with a 38-year-old secret lover was rejected by her. He in return had taken revenge by slitting her throat and had committed suicide by consuming poison.

The dead woman, a mother of two children, had been identified as Kanthipura Surangika and a resident of Sihilelthe­nna area in Indigasthu­duwa.

The police learnt that the victim was residing in a part of a house belonging to a friend with her 16-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son after returning from foreign employment. She was reportedly living separately from her husband.

It was revealed in the evidence given to the police from the owner of the house, relations and neighbours that her neck had been slit by a machete taken from the kitchen due to a dispute that had taken place as the victim has given up the love affair after coming from abroad. After killing the woman, the suspect has taken poison and he was rushed to the Nagoda Hospital by neighbours but had died while being treated. It was also revealed that the suspect Fernando Bandula Eranga (34) was a father of four children and was living separately from his wife.

It was further reported to police that while he was assaulting the womam, her son and the lady owner of the house also have intervened to rescue the woman and have been injured and admitted to the Dharga Town Hospital.

Acting Magistrate B. V. Wijesena visited the scene and instructed to send the body of the woman before the Judicial Medical Officer in Nagoda Hospital and to hold an inquiry and evidences relevant in this regard to be submitted on 3rd of April to the Matugama Magistrate’s Court.

The Magisteria­l inquiry is scheduled to be held in the Nagoda General Hospital and further investigat­ions are conducted by the Welipenna Police OIC, CI Lalith Rajamanthr­i on the instructio­n of SP Upul Nilmini Ariyaratna in the Kalutara Police division.
