A drug trafficker who had in his possession 100 packets of heroin, was arrested near the Godagama exchange in the southern expressway. Police said the suspect travelling from Colombo by jeep along the expressway, had attempted to get away at the Godagama exchange and flee along the main GalleMatara road.

Investigations revealed that the suspect who brought large stocks of heroin from Colombo and distributed them through the Easy Cash transaction system, had been carrying on the racket for a long time.

A Police team laying in ambush for about eight hours near the Godagama exchange on information received by SP G.h.marapana to arrest the suspect, had signaled the suspicious vehicle to halt. The vehicle had sped away, but the police gave chase and arrested the suspect.

A senior police officer who found in the vehicle a parcel of grapes meant for the suspect’s children quipped “Oh, so you are taking grapes for your children and heroin for other’s children?”

Under interrogation, the suspect revealed that the kingpin behind the racket was a convict serving a life imprisonment for murder.

Police said the 43-year-old suspect had been living at Nadugala in Matara and at times in Kadawatha, to carry on the racket.
