Nuwara Eliya Fest begins

The Annual Nuwara Eliya April Festival commenced with a colourful parade of school bands last morning.

More than 1,500 school children from 54 schools participat­ed.

Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake was the Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony at the Nuwara Eliya main bus stand grounds. The festival, organised by Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council on the instructio­ns of Mayor Chandana Lal Karunartne will last till April 30.

Addressing the gathering the Chief Minister said the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council had provided adequate facilities to foreign and local tourists visiting Nuwara Eliya during the festival.

He said that several issues affecting the area had now been resolved and that the people could enjoy the festival free of any obstacles.

The parade of school bands commenced after the Mayor made the formal proclamati­on of the Nuwara Eliya April Festival. The parade lasted more than two hours.

S t a t e M i n i s t e r of Education V. Radhakrish­nan, DIG Nuwara Eliya division Chandana Galappatth­i, Zonal Director of Education Amarasiri Piyadasa, Asst. Commission­er Local Government Vidura Sampath, Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretary Sujeewa Bodhimanna and several Provincial Council members were present.
