Kaduwela Municipal Councillor Wilathgamuwage Don Aruna Lakmal Kushantha has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) early last morning in connection with the shooting incident involving SAITM CEO Sameera Senaratne.

The CID obtained a 48-hour detention order to interrogate the suspect after producing him before the Kaduwela Magistrate yesterday. He will be produced in the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court again today (19).

The CEO of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) escaped unhurt on February 6 when two men on a motorbike wearing full-face helmets opened fire at the car driven by him near the SAITM campus in Malabe.

A complaint had been lodged by Mr. Senaratne at the Mulleriyawa Police Station following the shooting.

Earlier, the police had alleged that Mr. Senaratne staged the shooting which took place in Malabe to falsely portray a scenario in which his life was in danger. Investigations into the alleged shooting were thereafter handed over to the CID.

On February 27, the police arrested a resident of Embilipitiya with a 9mm pistol, a 3.8mm revolver and a motorcycle which the police believe was used for the shooting.
