When contacted,western Province Chief Minister Isura Devapriya said that funds were allocated to districts on the proposals received for development projects.“the amount allocated for Sri Jayawardenapura is vastly different to the amount allocated for Maharagama, as we are hoping to construct a new school in Madiwela,” he said.

The CM went on to say that they had not acted in a step motherly treatment to some areas.“we allocated the funds based on the proposals for projects that were received,” concluded.

A large part of the funds allocated for the development of education by the Western Provincial Council supplementary budget, has been allocated for the Colombo district, the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, CTU Secretary Joseph Stalin explained that Rs. 3,035.05 million had been allocated by the Council for the development of hospitals and schools which were in dilapidated conditions.

However, Rs. 1,996.88 million had been allocated for the development of education, Rs. 886 million of which is allocated for the Colombo district. Fifty percent of which was allocated for only the Sri Jayawardenapura educational zone.
