Graduates in Uva PC who passed exam stage protest
Examination for recruitment of teachers
More than 500 graduates in the Uva Province who passed the examination for recruitment of teachers, yesterday staged a protest and a fast in front of the Uva Provincial Council demanding immediate appointments.
They criticised the JVP Provincial Council member Samantha Vidyaratne who filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the results of the examination and compelled him to withdraw the case that led to the suspending of appointments.
Convenor of the protest R.M.G.B. Kumara said 1505 graduates had been selected for appointment as teachers, on the results of the examination held by the Uva Province Public Service Commission in 2017, but the appointments had been suspended pending a court order. He warned that the graduates would continue the fast until the PC member withdrew the court case.
Meanwhile, PC member Samantha Vidyaratne said the examination held in 2017 resulted in serious injustices to the majority of graduates and that he as patron of the Unemployed Graduates’ Association filed action in the Supreme Court on the request of the aggrieved graduates. He said he sought a court order to seek justice for the aggrieved parties and not to deny appointments to those already selected. The PC member was hopeful that the judgment in the case would be delivered soon.
