Woman cheater arrested
A woman who cheated several individuals on the promise of providing them employment in Italy and obtained money was arrested by the Dickwella Police during a raid in Aluthgoda.
The suspect Indrani David of Wanathawilluwa in Puttalam was produced before the Matara Magistrate and remanded till May 21. Police said two other suspects, including her brother, who were also involved in the racket would be arrested soon.
Police said she had rented a house in Aluthgoda area to carry on the racket and that she was building a house adjacent to it. She was preparing to flee from the area to escape arrest when the racket had been exposed by the media. However, the police on a tip-off from the public carried out the raid with the help of a team of investigation officers of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and arrested her. During investigations the police recovered the passports, marriage certificates, birth certificates, photocopies of national identity cards, bank receipts and a host of other documents belonging to the victims. A cellular phone and a luxury motorcar used by the suspect were seized by the police.
A senior official of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment said Kurunegala, Galenbindunuwewa, Puttalam, Meerigama, Gampaha, and Polonnaruwa Police had received complaints against the suspect and that 16 cases against her were pending.
A police team under OIC Crime Investigation Branch SI Gayanka carried out the raid on the instructions of OIC Dickwella Police CI Duminda Kulasekara, ASP Y.L. Leelawansa, SP G.H. Marapana. Foreign Employment Bureau officials including the Manager (Special Investigations Unit) CI C.g.welagedara, IP Abeydeera, SI Manjula Jayewardene, and SI Hasintaka Liyanage took part in the raid.
