- BY PUSHPAKUMARA JAYARATNA

President Maithripala Sirisena denounced the abuse of fallen war heroes, soldiers disabled in the war for political gains as unethical, participating in a ceremony of unveiling of plaque of War Hero Memorial held at KurunegalaDambulla main road in Maligapitiya ground in North Western Province.

President said that all the allegations for punishing of war heroes aiming at the government is baseless and rejected totally. They are political conspiracies and targeting to inconvenience the government. This ceremony was held to honour 4135 war heroes.

The memorial constructed in 80s has been removed by Road Development Authority and a new memorial has been established instead. For the construction of this memorial, President has given Rs.10 million from the presidential fund and Rs.27 million from the war hero fund of North Western Provincial Council and Governor of North Western Province. This was constructed by the Engineering Regiment of Sri Lanka Army under the direction of North Western Province Chief Minister Dharmasiri Dassanayake.

After unveiling the memorial plaque the president paid the floral tribute. The Chief Minister of North Western Province, family members of war heroes, officers of the security forces also participated at this event.

Our government as well as former government helped the war heroes families in various ways and gave considerable privileges. We provided many facilities to the education of the children of war heroes, increased their allowances and gave scholarships to their children. Our Security Forces are well disciplined and internationally recognized.

war heroes. Who harassed the war heroes? The biggest harassment was sending former Army Commander to jail by removing his medals.

We have not done any harassment to any war hero in our time. We are trying to protect them from the allegations aimed at security forces.

Despite numerous allegations made against us, I prevented the creation of International Judiciary in Sri Lanka, bringing International judges, Electric Chair. Sometimes it is not a secret that some were arrested by security forces with regard to killing of journalists and harassing them. It is not a harassment.

We have given the proper recognition to war heroes, I say it very clearly.
