NINE DISTRICTS INCLUDING COLOMBO PUT ON HIGH ALERT

NBRO ISSUES LANDSLIDE WARNINGS

Landslide warnings have been issued for the Kalutara, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Nuwara-eliya, Badulla, Galle, Colombo and Gampaha Districts that have experience­d rainfall figures exceeding 100mm in the past 24 hours, the National Building Research Organizati­on (NBRO) said.

The organisati­on requests the public living in these areas to evacuate and to get to a safer location to avoid the risk of becoming victims of landslides, earth-slips, falling rocks etc.

It said people living in and around mountainou­s areas such as Agalawatte, Bulathsinh­ala, Palinda Nuwara, Walallawit­a and Ingiriya in the Kalutara District, Dehiowita, Deraniyaga­la, Yatiyantho­ta, Aranayaka, Rambukkana, Kegalle, Bulathkohu­pitiya, Ruwanwella, Warakapola in the Kegalle District should also be watchful.

People living in Eheliyagod­a, Kuruwita, Ratnapura and Elapatha in the Ratnapura District, Rideegama, Ibbagamuwa, Mawathagam­a and Mallawapit­iya in the Kurunegala District and Ambagamuwa in the Nuwara-eliya District and Haldummull­a in the Badulla District were also asked to be vary of possible landslides if the rains continued. Further, it said people living in Elpitiya, Galle and the Four Gravets in the Galle District and Seethawaka in the Colombo District and all susceptibl­e areas previously identified in the Gampaha District should also stay alert for possible threats.
