Hanwella double-murder suspect nabbed at Welikanda

The suspect wanted by the Police in connection with the double murder at Mambula in Hanwella on June 18, had been taken into custody yesterday at Welikanda in Polonnaruw­a, the Police said.

He was fleeing from the area when he was checked on suspicion at Welikanda by a Police Patrol to find that he had been wanted by Hanwella Police in connection with a murder. The victims, Senerath Liyanage Lakmini Sriyakandi (38) a mother of one child, and her mother Ranasinghe Arachchige Mary Nona (68) had been employed as housemaids in a Middle-east country and had returned to the country recently. The suspect was handed over to Hanwella Police yesterday afternoon for further investigat­ions.

The Police said that he had hacked to death his wife, and mother-in-law at midnight and fled from the area.

Under interrogat­ion he had told that he changed his clothes and fled to Kadawatha by push cycle and from there by bus, the Police said.

He said he sold the push cycle for Rs.1,000 to an individual in Kadawatha to find money for the journey.

Meanwhile, the Police said that his twomonth-old-baby, who was starving for 15 hours, had been admitted to the hospital by the residents of the area.

The suspect was produced before Avissawell­a Magistrate’s Court after recording his statement.

OIC Crimes Investigat­ion Branch Bandula Jayasinghe and Sergeant 19485 are conducting investigat­ions.
