- BY THILANKA KANAKARATHNA

With the Government’s recent move to resolve the prolonged SAITM controversy, Parents’ Union of Medical Students (PUMS) yesterday urged President Maithripala Sirisena to discharge all ANTISAITM activists from lawsuits filed against them.

In a letter sent to the President, PUMS had said though the justice was served to that medical students yet the conveners and members of ANTISAITM movements’ are being inconvenienced due to the legal action taken against them during ANTI-SAITM protests.

PUMS Secretary Prem Kulatilake said that justice should be served to those who struggled to safeguard the country’s free education including Medical Faculty Students’ Action Committee (MFSAC) former convener Ryan Jayalath, Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Convener Lahiru Weerasekara, GMOA President Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya, several Bhikkus and parents.

He said that lawsuits were filed against them based on the statements made during the ANTISAITM actions and were false allegations.

“As over 12,000 L.T.T.E. rebellions were granted general amnesty it’s the Government’s responsibility to release the ANTI-SAITM supporters from the lawsuits against them and create an environment which would be conducive to pursue their education and to engage in employment,” he said.

Mr. Kulatilake said that the accused students had to waste their time in the Courts to attend these cases disrupting their education therefore requested the President to set them free from any legal action regarding the ANTI-SAITM actions.
