- BY YOHAN PERERA IN MONARAGALA

Buddhist monks of Uva Wellasa urged the government to pay more attention to the area stating that respective governments who ran the country since Independence have not do so enough.

They made this call at the opening of a new Sanghawasa at Pothubandana Temple in Bibile on Saturday evening.

The Sangha Nayaka of Uva Wellassa Ven. Kandaudapathhuwe Sri Sudhham Thera said next Independence Day should be celebrated in Uva Welllasssa. The Venerable Thera said the Independence Day should be celebrated in this area as this year marked the 200th anniversary of Uva Wellassa rebellion. He recalled that 33 monks were disrobed and killed by the British during the rebellion.

Ven. Badullagammana Sumanasara Thera who addressed the gathering next, said “the government should restore everything which the British destroyed in Uva. He urged the government to develop infrastructure facilities in the area.“I heard President Maithripala Sirisena saying he would participate in 100 opening ceremonies in Polonnaruwa. However I would like to say that no leader will be able to develop the country without giving prominence to Uva Welllassa.”

They also urged the government to support the farmers in the area who have been hit by the drought.

They said it was from Pothubandana Vihare where the Tripitaka was written in Sri Lanka for the first time. Copies of Tripitaka were sent to main temples such as Maha Vihare in Anuradhapura, Jethawanaramaya and Abhayagiriya from Pothubandana Temple according to the prelates.
