RAILWAY ENGINES to transport waste from Kelaniya to Aruwakkalu

Cabinet approval was granted to procure locomotive­s to transport solid waste from Kelaniya to Aruwakkalu, Puttalam.

The management of solid waste collected in urban areas, especially in Colombo and its suburbs, has become a major issues faced by residents and local government officials charged with disposing garbage.

The sanitary landfill that is being constructe­d in Arwakkalu, despite numerous issues faced during the initial phase of the project, is on the verge of completion.

The project will also establish necessary infrastruc­ture to transport waste transferre­d from Kelaniya to Aruwakkalu.

While, waste to incinerati­on plants are being constructe­d, waste collected in Colombo and other areas will be disposed of in the sanitary land fill that is being establishe­d in Aruwakkalu, Puttalam as well as the waste management park establishe­d by the SLLRDC in Muthurajaw­ela.

The site at Aruwakkalu is later to be used as a dumping site for ash produced by the plants during the incinerati­on projects.
