-

As France gets ready to celebrate the Bastille Day, the French National Day, it is important to evaluate the contribution of French enterprises that operate as the Board of Investment (BOI) companies to Sri Lanka’s national economy. One such enterprise is Noyon Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd.

Noyon Lanka is a knitted lace manufacturer producing lace in the form of trims, bands, galloons and all-overs, which are supplied to some of the world’s largest lingerie brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Intimissimi, La Senza, Pink, Calvin Klein, Etam, Triumph and Amante.

Noyon Lanka commenced operations in 2004 as a joint venture between MAS Capital and Noyon Calais, in France, which has a lace heritage of more than a century.

Noyon Lanka’s main manufacturing facility is based in the Biyagama Export Processing Zone, which has capability for lace design, knitting, dyeing and finishing, whilst providing employment to more than 650 employees. Due to the growing demand for Noyon lace, in 2018, a second knitting plant was established in Giriulla to expand the existing knitting capacity. With 14 years of excellence in building and growing a profitable organisation providing the finest quality lace, Noyon Lanka has also initiated many pursuits in order to maintain its triple bottom line: people, planet and profit.

Consequently, employee engagement has become paramount in Noyon Lanka where, the employees are the forefront in the day-to-day operational developments as well as the social and environmental initiatives of the organisation.

For example, the team members and staff are formed into quality circles and encouraged to come up with Kaizen projects to improve their areas of work. These projects are evaluated semi-annually and an award ceremony is held to reward the teams with the most successful projects.

In addition, the BOI company also has many employee welfare undertakings such as free transport, free uniforms and safety shoes, free meals for team members and staff, ‘mother’s meal’ for pregnant mothers, medical centre facilities, gym facilities for team members and library facilities, etc. to provide a desirable physical and mental working environment.

Furthermore, annual trips as well as inter-departmental sports tournaments are organised to motivate the employees and promote a team working culture.

As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Noyon with the assistance of its employees carries out numerous programmes each year, e.g. donating baby gifts for pregnant mothers, ‘shramadana’ campaigns at identified Elders Homes and king coconut water donation to the Cancer Hospital in Maharagama to name a few, in order to give back to the community at large.
