Prime Minister Modi said this at the launch of Suwa Seriya ambulance Programme in Jaffa on Saturday.

“Sri Lanka is not just a neighbour but a very special and trusted partner in the South Asian and Indian Ocean family,” the Indian Prime Minister said.

“India had been and would always remain ‘the first responder’ for Sri Lanka, in both good times and in bad times,” he added

He also quoted the late Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi in saying that Sri Lanka should not be out of sight and out of mind.

“When Mahatma Gandhi was leaving the North of Sri Lanka after a visit, he said that he could leave the whole of Ceylon, but let it not be “out of sight, out of mind.”

He exhorted people of India and Sri Lanka to be in touch with each other so that they could know each other better and become even closer friends. He encouraged the people of Sri Lanka to come and experience the New India that is taking shape.
