‘ Majority community representatives plot to crush minority rights’

- BY T.K.RAHMATHULLAH

The representatives from the majority community are resorting to every possible way to crush the rights of the Muslim Community during the Amparai District Co-ordinating Committee meetings, Eastern Province former Minister Uthumaalebbe said.

He said so yesterday, explaining his stance to the media, on the difference of opinion that occurred during the Akkaraipattu Co-ordinating Committee meeting.

“As long as I am the joint Chairman of the Amparai District Co-ordinating Committee and Chairman of Pradeshiya Co-ordinating committee, I will not allow racist acts to take place in any form nor will I allow a single party to dominate,” he said.

“I was elected twice to be the representative of the people in the Eastern Provincial Council and when I became a Minister, I did strive to build up racial amity.the District Co-ordination Committee meetings are held consisting of people’s representatives and higher officials of the government to get together and solve problems of the people,”mr.uthumalebbe said.

He said that certain political representatives from Amparai District were attempting to promote racism among the three races just for their own political mileage.

“The representatives from the SLMC who obtained all the votes from the Muslims promising to speak for the Muslims are remaining silent without raising their voices against racism at the District C-ordination meetings, for trivial benefits,” he said.

“We are faced with a situation where only a few Muslim representatives have to voice their opinions against racism directed at Muslims,,” the EPC former minister said.
