PERA VC ASSURES UNIVERSITY TO REOPEN WITHIN WEEK

The Vice-chancellor of the Peradeniya University Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake said that all Faculties of the University would re-open within a week on the decision of the Advisory Council and the Senate.

However, he told the media that he did not have the power to supersede the regulations of the Senate, the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Higher Education.

He pointed out that about 30 rounds of talks had been held, several of them without the participation of adequate student representation.

The VC said the Medical, Dental Science, Agriculture and the Veterinary Science Faculties were now functioning as usual and that he expected the cooperation of all those concerned to re-open the University.

Meanwhile, President of the General Student Union Mahil Bandara said the University Administration had failed to resolve the issue despite the Vicechancellor’s claim that the University would re-open within a week.

He said that the student union’s campaign reached the 50th day yesterday.
