- BY YOHAN PERERA

The government had created a situation where people could breathe free after a three years of hardship, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday. The Premier expressed this sentiment at a ceremony held to distribute land deeds to the landless in Ratnapura last evening. “Government had

created a situation where people could breathe free without fear and now we have embarked on carrying out tangible development work” he said.

“We broke norms that were followed in politics in Sri Lanka for years and got President Maithripala Sirisena elected and to form a national government. We reinstated Shirani Bandaranayake, who was impeached unlawfully as the Chief Justice. We introduced the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. We have also resolved the debt services issue. Country’s debt service is going to be 70% of the state expenditure. Therefore we have created space for the people to breathe freely,” the PM added.

Premier Wickremesinghe then referred to the media saying it would be an impossible task to find a private sector media organization that had not criticized him during the past few years. “Finding a private sector media organization that had not criticized me would be an impossible task like the task given by the Buddha to Kisa Gotami to find mustard from a house where no one has died,” he said.
