Three sluice gates of the Maussakele reservoir had been opened after five years, while sluice gates of several other reservoirs in the catchment areas in the Nuwara Eliya District had also been opened with the sharp rise in water levels, Engineers said.

The two main waterfalls in the area, Devon and St. Clairs Falls have created a scenic beauty again as they received water at their full capacity with the torrential rains in the area for the past few days, sources said.

“With the inclement weather continuing in the region Castlereagh and Maussakele Reservoirs have started to overflow.

“This resulted in electricity generation at power plants fed by Canyon, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya, Wimlasurendra (Norton Bridge) which have reached spill levels,” the official said.

“All 12 sluice gates of the Castlereagh Reservoir had been opened by yesterday and three sluice gates of the Upper Kotmale, another three at Laxapana, and two at Canyon had also been opened,” the official said.
